Since hosting the Olympic Games in 1992 Barcelona has become one of the hottest places to visit in Europe. With a wonderful mix of architecture, music and fashion, the capital of Catalunya keeps you fascinated day and night. Walk through the city and see how history comes alive. Dating back over two thousand years and the city’s looking to the future with energy and enthusiasm. Marvel at beautiful, modernist buildings, with the latest trends in design that are also visible on the streets, squares and alleyways. The people of Barcelona value their traditions and take an active part in organizing a variety of festive celebrations all year round.
Situated between the Mediterranean and Tibidabo mountain the city enjoys an almost perfect climate, making it an ideal place to be at any time of the year. You'll be well-fed in Barcelona, whether you want to indulge in a delicious feast of Catalan or international cuisine, or just pick up the bare essentials. Delicious tapas always satisfy, especially when they are accompanying drinks at a bar. And the regional specialties of seafood, meat, fruit and vegetables make bellies smile. The Boqueria market (Mercat de la Boqueria) is one of Europe's greatest fresh food markets, and is well worth a visit. Good restaurants are easily found all over the city satisfying all sorts of tastes and budgets.
The Barrie Gotic is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Catalan architecture developed between 1885 and 1950 and left an important legacy in Barcelona. Especially remarkable is the work of architect Antoni Gaudi, which can be seen throughout the city. His best known work is the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Família, which has been under construction since 1882.
Of course a visit to Barcelona can’t do without a walk down La Rambla, Spain’s most famous street. Stroll down from Plaza Catalunya towards the harbor side and let yourself be entertained by what happens around you. The flower and pet shops, newspaper stands, restaurants and living statues are all part of a great scheme that makes Barcelona so special. Hop in some local bars, enjoy some sangria and tapas, and feel what the city is all about. Don’t forget to spend a few hours on Barcelona’s white sandy beaches or your vacation will not be complete.
At night the city’s a playground for the young and restless. Just after Spanish dinner time lots of trendy bars start filling up with outgoing people who like to relax a bit or get boozed up before hitting the clubs. In Barcelona you get them in all sorts, and so try the local beers, get a tropical cocktail, slam home some shots and dance the night away. If you like it live, want the DJ to spin some tunes or boogie on some old school stuff, Barcelona has got it all for you and it doesn’t stop when the sun comes up.
If you do have some more time, then it is really worth it to head further out of the city. The mountain-top monastery of Montserrat is a popular day-trip to make, though the beaches on either side of the city will be tempting in the summer. If you have some more time, you can delight in a visit to the local wine country, take a hike through national parks, or go on a field trip to medieval city of Girona and the Dalí museum in Figueres . Catalunya has a very rich history and shows nature from its best side all year round.
